I worked in higher ed for longer than I'd like to admit - the FAFSA feeds the student's financial aid package which is a culmination of loans and grants.

To clarify - a FAFSA refund is a financial aid refund and if your financial aid is comprised of more than just grants and scholarships (e.g. loans...), that refund check you're getting still gets paid back when you start making payments. Not to say in the moment that check isn't helpful, it got me through many semesters where I needed books and didn't have the financial overhead to get them--I'm paying for it now though.
