David I guess, never really admitted it but Freddie Mercury had to admit it in the end, not like everyone couldn't see it. Once upon a time, I worked with the AIDS community and their buddy system in Houston. It was not pleasant to see what that disease did to their bodies and themselves. I am thankful those days are mostly gone. Even my doctor looks at me with fascination when I tell him about working in the hospital back in the day and how much garb we had to put on just to go into a room with an AIDS patient, both to protect them and us. No one knew yet how the disease was actually transmitted, we knew but didn't know if just contact would do it or if it had to be more. Glad those days are gone too.

Thanks for sharing that. And the gay/bi/les/trans/ace communities... are diverse, with so much more than an STD to focus on. We're all women family members, attending this event, and have been shunned by our judgmental family members, which is why this is significant. Many of us in this circle are also incest and rape survivors, and just acknowledging it, makes us lose a bit more shame each time.

I recently reconnected with a friend I volunteered with from the early 90s, who had AIDs before it was known why, or we had drugs to help. I've known men who've died from it. I also know a lot of happy LGBTA folks too. Many of us are just trying to accept ourselves, in a culture that prefers hetero-normative cis gender and orientation.
