Good point. Last time it was a skunk, so a rat doesn't seem as bad.
If it makes you feel slightly better, a bird flew into the window and died on our sidewalk. I was hoping a neighborhood cat would catch wind of it and take it as a snack. It ended up laying there for about 2 weeks through several bouts of rain. I eventually went out there and just threw it in the garbage using my bare hands. This was about 2 weeks ago and I still haven't died or developed bird flu symptoms yet.

I've had weird issues on those EthSci HITs before. Maybe it will come back?

In non-turk news, I need serious help. Something left a dead rat in my backyard. My plan to hope the gardener would deal with it failed miserably. This is twice now my husband has been out of town and I have had to deal with a dead rodent. What's the best plan here? I really don't want to touch it with my hand in any way, but I also don't want to ruin my kitchen tongs by touching it with that. I'm that person who won't stir my soup with a clean fly swatter.
dustpan and long broom. I put a BIG piece of construction paper over the body while I squint - then I put the dustpan next to the deceased. Perhaps a cloth would also be good.

I don't hold the dustpan, but push it under the deceased, with the broom on the other side, so his tiny corpse does NOT appear beyond the paper shroud. I am still squinting, not wanting to look directly at the deceased (even when covered in the paper shroud - I feel this would be disrespectful).

Then, if I can, I use my foot next to the dustpan - standing up and sort of moving the broom closer to the dustpan. I never scream. (but I do let out smaller incantations - just to let the gods know that I am sort-of-doing what I can).

EEK.

Hmm. Alright, if you haven't returned any, it's just Google being Google. Going through your queue and finding the one that functions can help- usually it's the very first one you accepted. You might have to refresh the iFrame.

This was the most respectful post I've ever seen about disposing of a dead rat carcass.

Give it a nice eulogy, for every rat has lived a life full of adventures, loves lost and gained, trash eaten, and friends who will miss them dearly. Then put it in a pyre on top of a little boat, and set fire to it as it sails away.

This is awesome. The construction paper is genius. I am going to try this and then burn the broom and dustpan.
