My parents took the stance that as long as they saw me doing everything possible to help myself, if I needed help they would help me. But not if I just wanted a handout.

I've attended a LOT of wedding as a photographer over the past few years. Probably around 40 total, it's not my main concentration I just use it to fill in the gaps. Most of those weddings have been a colossal waste of money. I blame it on the american habit of extreme over consumption and lack of moderation. My favorite ones to shoot are the low key simple weddings being paid for by the couple themselves. They tend to be more earnest, the guests tend to be more genuinely emotional... the ceremonies tend to be less full of pomp, and the reception tends to be more about the celebration of each other as people rather than extravagant frat parties... I usually give them a bit of price discount too, because I appreciate the lack of pageantry and self-glorification.

...while I wouldn't mind doing that HIT, I refuse to give out my birthday, ex-wife's birthday, daughter's birthday, etc. Seems like they're asking for too much personal information.

My wedding was low key and yet still paid for by my parents. Just saying, extravagant doesn't automatically mean paid for by mom and dad or visa versa. I think they spent about 3k total, but it wasn't my dream wedding.

So, this didn't end up working out because our daughter died before we actually tied the knot, but the now ex and I planned to run off to Vegas, get hitched, then come back home and throw a humongous party. He said I could spend whatever I wanted if I didn't force him to do a church wedding.

I so could have thrown a great party for 3K! (He gave me a higher budget but I probably wouldn't have spent it knowing me...)
