I managed to complete this marathon of a survey and, at the recommendation of other workers, I wanted to send you a note about its length. I acted quickly to grab the survey when I saw I had a chance to fill something out regarding my wonderful daughter, but after around 45 minutes of a greatly hurried pace, I began wondering if it was ever going to end. I asked others if I should just return the HIT, to which the answer was a resounding YES, but I continued and finally was able to complete the task. Basically, I wanted to let you know that I felt this level of pay for that sort of time commitment -- along with the amount of personal detail you wanted -- was highly inappropriate. I'm not a believer that one should be able to earn minimum wage by filling out surveys, but the original purpose and spirit of Amazon Mech. Turk was to provide a rate at least comparable to that standard. Although min. wage has risen since MTurk began, and many HITs pay less than they started, there is still an acceptable threshold and I feel you (or whomever is responsible for this HIT) grossly violated that.
I just want to be clear -- as an example of the ridiculous nature of this survey -- the FOURTH section (I believe) consisted of 196 questions, and that wasn't the end of the HIT.
Again, I felt compelled to reach out to you regarding this incident and hope to inspire change in the future. I've only been doing this as a source of supplemental income for about a week and a half now, but from the responses I've gotten from other workers much more experience than I am, this was a gross exploitation of the system and the resources within.
Damn their own time estimate was 15 minutes???

This took me 1:30.
Please don't let it be. Don't buy into this Sunk Cost nonsense with mTurk. Throw it back. If you do it, and others do it, there is no reason for requesters to pay a decent wage. During the 47 minutes you were doing that, you could have done so many other things that were actually worth your time, even if you wasted 10 minutes before you realized it was shit.Sounds about right for me...
Whenever I send an email to a requester about their shitty pay, I always let them know that they may end up receiving crappy, unusable data that will be illegitimate to use in their analyses. That generally boosts the speed at which they respond and correct the pay.Just sent this to the email address in response to that survey. Maybe it'll do some good or maybe they'll get pissy and reject my entry. Meh...

Seriously. Learning a new language via duolingo for 47 minutes SHOULD be worth well over $1.00 to you. If not, there is generally something you could do for 47 minutes that's worth at least as much as a dollar. Please don't let it be. Don't buy into this Sunk Cost nonsense with mTurk. Throw it back. Oh absolutely! I did freelance web/graphic design for a while and of course that market is saturated with people that will take nearly any job for any pay. It's no wonder that people think a logo and simple website should cost $50 or so at this point. I honestly was excited to take a survey relating to my daughter but I would finish a section and assume it was over....."Click Next to be taken to the next questionnaire."Please don't let it be.
