That's awfully young to acquire a kitten. they're best in groups/pairs. they play with each other, keep each other company, and through their play they learn what is too rough and what hurts.

using the litter is almost instinctual. but it helps if it sees other cats bury their crap. the reason they do it is to help hide their tracks from larger predators. the cat is just about the age where it does a lot of playful jumping, pouncing, walking around, etc.. but as soon as you see it pooping or peeing, put it in the litter, and then try to guide it to bury/scratch. don't be forceful, but do be patient, their leg bones are extremely fragile to the typical adult's strength. another cat would make it a lot easier. even a visiting cat, if at all possible.

try different litters to see what works best for you. clay litter is not that great, no matter what rating of dust it claims to have, they all are dusty, and once breathed in you can't really get it out. (Mesothelioma) but that's actually not that common.

in the last 4000-5000 cats that I assisted my ex's animal rescue with, clay litter was probably about a third of our litter usage (we used dr elsey premium - it's better quality than cheap brands and lasts much longer without breaking down - so because it lasted longer without going bad, it was cheaper in the long run).

feline pine and other 'sticks' litters that break down under urine are ok, but I just personally don't like them. arm and hammer makes a decent wood based litter. and there are other litters that look like crystals that are typically used for cats with urinary tract infections, but I find that it's great to mix 1 part of crystals with 2 parts premium clay.

where did you get this solitary kitten? and why doesn't it have any littermates or mother? or am I misreading, and you do in fact have other cats?

I got this cat from a friend of a friend who brought it over. Apparently it was living with 16 other cats and wasn't even getting fed. We live in too small of a space to get a second cat so that is not an option. There's a dog downstairs so we need to keep the kitten upstairs separate from the dog. I bought the scoopable unscented arm and hammer litter for the cat. I had too big of a litter box at first, but I just bought a smaller box today. I might have to move the litter box to a quieter location. I owned a cat before that was about 5 weeks old when I got it and it was already litter trained (I don't have that particular cat anymore because she was not good with kids at all and I was going to have a baby so I gave her to an old nice couple). I figured this one be trained since it was around so many cats, but who knows if the owners even had litter boxes for the cats? It seemed like a gross situation and I couldn't let the cat go back to where it was living.
