two kittens, or a puppy or two. and if they don't socialize with the older one, there's not much to be done about it. the older one was solo for most of its life, and as a result, probably either avoids cats or aggressively defends what it considers to be its own area. other than that, the last option is to make sure to spend time with the cat everyday yourself. brush it, play with a laser toy, bring a few cat snacks on the couch while you watch tv and see if it'll sit on your lap or next to you. basically without another animal to do it for you, you need to give of yourself. this can be difficult because the cat will mostly not want to be a part of any of that nonsense.
Thank you! We're lucky that she's sweet with us, so she is our TV lap buddy. We'll keep spending that time with her. We do have a small dog, but he's slowing down too much to play with her like he used to, so kittens might be in our future and I'm glad to know they do best in a pair. I have a friend who was just able to adopt an entire litter together... I envy their house full of adorableness

That moment your mom surprises you with bubble tea. Sometimes I don't miss being at college. Sometimes.

I got this cat from a friend of a friend who brought it over. Apparently it was living with 16 other cats and wasn't even getting fed. We live in too small of a space to get a second cat so that is not an option. There's a dog downstairs so we need to keep the kitten upstairs separate from the dog. I bought the scoopable unscented arm and hammer litter for the cat. I had too big of a litter box at first, but I just bought a smaller box today. I might have to move the litter box to a quieter location. I owned a cat before that was about 5 weeks old when I got it and it was already litter trained (I don't have that particular cat anymore because she was not good with kids at all and I was going to have a baby so I gave her to an old nice couple). I figured this one be trained since it was around so many cats, but who knows if the owners even had litter boxes for the cats? It seemed like a gross situation and I couldn't let the cat go back to where it was living.
well, it probably will get used to the litter, you just need to place the cat in there when you notice it going. and that's the hard part, you don't have that kind of time. not many people really do, to be honest. as far as the dog, is there a reason you must keep them separate? the kitten over-reacting? or the dog just too rough/excited/aggresive? that clay litter is better than the scoop away, but i'd suggest trying their pine litter from arm and hammer. it works well and smells pretty good. with kittens you want to try to avoid clay when possible. it's not necessary, obviously, because they will survive, but it will be better for the younger kitten to breathe better, and also to explore what it likes to use. even sand isn't terrible. it isn't great, but it's not terrible.

Bah. Just got a rejection from the second part of a two part study for invalid completion code.

Then I ended up checking my emails and noticed that I was dealing with two studies with near identical names with near identical subjects from two different requesters.

It ought to be fine. You got it out of a bad situation. I care for a feral colony that is fading now as once I took control of them I TNR'd all of them. There were two queens who did tremendous damage in the way of having kittens. One of them, poor old thing, was constantly pregnant and she had large litters. So large she couldn't care for the tiny kittens and would bring them out early to be fed by me. I found one a home and soon got her fixed. The other had 4 per litter and took me over a year to catch, cagey thing.
There were probably too many kittens in that situation to train the baby properly and it might lack good attention. Just keep working at teaching it and give it lots of love. It ought to come around because once a cat accepts its litter box, they consider it high priority. Once I had a mother cat who was pregnant as in very, when we took her in. She had 4 kids and one of them was stupid as anything. I watched her and she would take that kitten aside more than the others and talk to it and love it and care for it. I watched her. And as she did that the kitten got smarter. I'm not kidding. I looked it up on the Internet as I was curious. Sure enough. Studies had been done on cats. The more a mother cat pays attention to a young one like that, it changes its DNA and it gets smarter. People need to pay attention.
She couldn't get the litter box to register though. That was the one thing she tried hard to do and couldn't get him to learn. One day I saw him in the box with his tiny sissies and they were boxing him. Hitting him, like don't you know what this is for?! He learned after that.

yea, when possible, you want to have more than one cat. they keep each other company, they keep each other from getting bored, and they learn not to scratch too hard. their increased social activities [with each other] usually lead to them being more friendly and playful even into their last few years. cats can live to be 25-30 and even at old ages can go back to being playful. but they also have personalities - some cats might be more reserved, and others might be more flippant. some like to play, and others only 'play' to eat. (hunt, even if not actually hunting prey)

That depends...the two I had (siblings) *hated* each other later on. Had to keep them separated.

My sister gave me her full grown cat because its siblings were attacking it every time it tried to use the litter box. the poor thing was scared of using a box for the first two weeks she was here, but now she is the queen of the house, lol.

Is there a way to move the the one with the least amount of time left after completing a HIT in your queue instead of the oldest one? This week long mobile app study is gonna get really annoying.
