I honestly havn't even figured out or bothered to look at how to power up the pokes I just like going on walks and catching them. I saw a lot of real wildlife this week too.

You just click on them in your Pokedex and then click on either evolve or powerup if you have enough stardust and candy. It's pretty easy. You'll also catch stronger ones as you level. You can also transfer weak pokemon to the professor and you'll get candy that way as well.

You just keep doing you though.

I'd recommend disabling it when you don't specifically need it, as said above it's more page requests and there's also some glitches with it that make it annoying to use if you're plowing through batch work.

I wonder if it would be worth powering it up at all.
I saw someone in my area caught a 1000cp Arcanine and I cried inside

I did power that one up. It was a sort of a test for me. Almost level 10 though so I'm just going back to collecting and gaining xp. Too low on potions to be competing at the moment. I took a couple Gyms only to have them take back pretty quickly. Used a LOT of potions that way. They only heal your dudes 20hp at a time so once you get tougher pokemon you're pretty well at a shortage of potions compared to their hp.

I hate Riley. I hate ADAM and Maggie and the Initiative. I do like the Xander/Spike bromance, but that's about it.

The best way to lvl up quickly is to not evolve anything until lvl 9. Lvl 9 you get a lucky egg and this gives you double exp gains for 30 min. Then evolve all those shitty pidgeys and rattat's you have caught and you will be lvl 12-14 in no time
