Wow neato :) thanks for responding!

In my experience after turking for roughly 3 years or so, I've found that a lot of requesters tend to overestimate how long their tasks will take. Many have paid larger amounts such as $5, $10 that are expected to take an hour and are on average completed in less than 20 minutes. This makes it difficult to truly know how long a hit is going to take as requesters seem to have a varied sense of a turker's ability to finish in a hit in a specified time frame.

With that being said, you did indeed have a disclaimer in your task giving turkers a heads up and you're so so awesome for that. Many requesters seem to forget this important component in their hits and it really helps to know what we're getting ourselves into before we begin. If you're looking for better ways to handle the disappointment of the time length in your hit, the only thing I could suggest is offering more pay, but I know this isn't always easy for requesters.

Me personally, it did take roughly 10 hours to finish the entire hit which puts me around 6/hr for my work. I saw your post about wanting to push around minimum wage for your task which I believe is adequate, but again this is with the possibility of a bonus. You're essentially telling workers "you may or may not be making minimum wage for a 10 hour long task".

Again, my opinion does not deflect the opinion of other turkers who completed this task. Other workers may have found it enjoyable, but after years of being on this site on a somewhat consistent basis, I've seen more work that simply pays more and is more valuable of my time. I deeply understand your research is important and I greatly empathize with your situation, this is just my point of view after doing the task. Cheers! :)
Well said. I'm really happy these communities exist where we can have conversations like these.

To the first question - yes. $6-7/hour was the best we could do. To get to that we had to reduce the scope of the project a bit. From what I see I do feel like 6-7/hour is a reasonable mturk wage. Some of you are great turkers and can make more, but I imagine some of you will enjoy the guaranteed wage without having to search for it. Regardless, the point is that I hope each person understands what they are getting into so that they can decide for themselves if this wage is enough for them.

To the second question - performance bonuses are a huge part of psychology. It is important to have some motivational component for some of the tasks reflected in "real" money (rather than just more points). I have not sent out any bonuses yet, but they are a real part of the pay and will, on average, pay out something like $10 more.

The only reason someone should be upset that bonuses are split from the base pay is if they don't trust the requester to actually pay them. I totally get that. Part of the reason for me to have a presence in the mturk community is to assuage any of those fears. I want the bonus to be motivating, and I want you to trust that you will get it (even if it may take a bit for me to calculate/send out). We tried to get the bonuses automatically calculated and sent out so you wouldn't have to wait at all, but unfortunately we weren't able to do that. So you'll just have to wait for me! Sorry :)
I don't know where you saw that, but most of us don't remotely feel that way.

Apologies! We don't want anyone to die. Could you suggest ways where we could be more clear up front? I see some people complaining that the task really takes 10 hours, and is filled with tasks that are 20+ minutes long. On the face of it, both of these things are in the instructions.

It seems the people who are upset have a case of "unmet/ill-formed expectations" where they thought they'd be paid for...I don't know... less work? Maybe they expected tasks other than "annoying psychology tasks"? I'd like to make the introduction as transparent as possible so people don't regret participating and enter in with open eyes. Any feedback would be appreciated.
It's the internet .
People use this forum for a variety of purposes. We share information - learn how to do things better (more efficiently) and talk about different strategies. The other purpose that the forum serves is that this is the breakroom. We hang out and .........every once in awhile...........complain. It's important. Many of us are home alone for a good portion of the day working online - so blowing off steam here is to be expected.

I think that I'd take some of that complaining in that light. This is just the water cooler - sometimes when we kick at the wall it's for real ----------- other times, we're just sort of kicking because it has been a long day.

Anyone else getting an error on V2Ls when you submit a question, saying "hey you have to submit a question ending in a question mark"... and all submissions HAVE question marks...

I end up having to let the conversation die because my inputs aren't being accepted.

Anyone else?

If you're user two, I believe only your first response needs to be in the form of a question. Other than that either. or ! And only one. Not !!
