In 2014, three University of Minnesota researchers -- Aaron Sojourner, Akhmed Umyarov, and Alan Benson -- created 64 fake sockpuppet accounts on Turkopticon to review 39 bogus AMT requesters as part of an experiment (U.Mn. IRB No. 1405E-50363).

They called it a "exogenous manipulation of a database," presumably because it sounds better than "criminal hacking of somebody else's data."

I once created a fake Match.com profile page that listed my income as being six figures, my body muscular (with six pack abs), having the stamina of a bull and sporting a "certain attribute" that would make even a race horse green with envy.

I didn't even have to pause my X-box 360 COD game while typing that profile up.
