I fail to understand the point of some people to insult mTurk workers, or any other worker for that matter, who are simply trying to make some money. What is the point in that? (Not that you would know why they do it.)

I don't think there's much point, other than trying to make yourself feel or look superior. In the context of the Twitter issue, they were laughing at how much work "turkeys" were willing to do for so little pay and how they thought it was amusing that they could make "turkeys" do things for pennies.
