I haven't been stung, nor has my wife or any friends I've had out at the hive. Well, my wife got stung once, but that's because we foolishly tried smacking the bee off instead of brushing it away.

I've had friends out there with shorts and tank tops sticking their head in the hive, I've done it without gloves (and will be transitioning to gloveless soon).

Honeybees don't want to sting, because they die. They only sting if their safety or the safety of the hive is threatened.

Going to build a Warre Hive, (think I spelled that correctly,) and order a pack of bees and a queen for next spring. My wine garden is too big to not have pollinators now.

I may be hitting you up for advice at some point in the future. Fair warning. : )

I'll be interested in knowing how it turns out! Warres are interesting. I was going to do a top bar, but decided to just do a standard Langstroth, and I'm glad I did; much easier to handle just starting out XD. I didn't hear about the Warre hive until after I had bought all my equipment or I might have done that, seems super cool.

I don't know much about them though, I'd definitely recommend posting a bit to reddit.com/r/beekeeping, they're a great bunch of people and are extremely supportive.
