stories like this make me way more grateful that I have a chance to earn a decent amount of money. yikes. im suprised requesters stay.
This, for real. I've seen far too many requesters up and leave because they were getting shitty data or were being scammed. I've even seen exploits for HITs posted on Turkopticon :eyeroll:

Many don't. The amount of requester turnover is huge. Think about how many requesters post for awhile and then slowly disappear. I see requesters post quite often on Twitter saying they had bad experiences. For those that do stay, I think they realize they will receive a fair amount of trash submissions when they post HITs.

So are you all mostly referring to the batch posters? Or would you say most of this applies to the survey/academic posters as well?

Why on earth hasn't mturk died out yet if the quality of work is apparently so bad.

Just that when a requester publishes review HITs ( as in reviewing HITs previously submitted by other workers) there seems to be a high amount of submissions that are wrong, didn't read directions, etc.
I don't know what she's talking about in particular, but I"m gonna throw my stuff in here. There are (were?) sometimes hits where we review work done by other turkers. Sometimes it sucks so damned bad that I'm surprised anyone stays on mTurk.

Plus people have tried to scam my password qual hits for the forum, and if they'll try and scam that what won't they scam?
I had a requester post a makeup HIT for me and she didn't put a qual on it, but wrote "for [my worker ID] only" in the title. She said 6 people accepted and submitted it before I was able to finally catch it. She rejected all 6 of them. But come on, people. It clearly said it was for my worker ID only and yet 6 people not only accepted it but submitted it, too.
I've seen a person in an older IRC flat out say theyll submit shitty work for certain requesters because they don't give a shit

I speak for surveys. There's very few batches i'm comfortable with doing, and people bomb the to's of survey requesters for attention checks that are pretty obvious.

Uh thanks for the weekly worker activity report Amazon...on Wednesday....

I guess activity reports are now going through the same process as transfers.

It's both. But like I said, the turnover is huge. Every year, there are brand new university students who need a big pool of participants and here's MTurk. There are always new businesses and startups that need work done.

And although there is a lot of crap, there are also some really, really darn good workers. If requesters join forums or do their research and learn how to use MTurk effectively, they can create qual tests to get good, qualified workers and use attention checks or other methods to get some really awesome quality. But a lot of that falls on workers to educate requesters on how to do this and to educate new workers about the importance of doing good work.

Why do you think requesters have to have screeners that kick you out if you don't do them? (And why we can't say "This survey needs X.")

Because people lie on them too.
