On a potentially related note - anyone have any ideas what to do with five pounds of turnips?

I have never been to a Waffle House. Is it really worse than IHOP or Village Inn?

It's depends on the ones you go to. Most of the Waffle Houses I've been to are just as good as the IHOPs

No clue what a village inn is.

Turnip soup! It sounds yuckky when you think about it, but I have made it so many times and it's super yummy. Uses the greens, too. I have to see if I can find the recipe I use.

I'm no turnip fan but I once was in your position due to a CSA box and thought...what do I got to lose? Some chicken broth and other addings-in...so I I gave it a shot and it was so good.
