It took positively forever for me to be able to walk on it without a brace. And it was 7 months before I could go hiking again. I did it two years ago and last Friday I went ice skating with the kid and noticed it was weaker than my other ankle and ached a little more than the other one, but otherwise it's fine now.

Fortunately it was my left ankle and I drive an automatic so I was still able to drive. Had it been my right I would not have been able to drive for at least a month.

Eesh! That definitely sounds bad. It can take a few years for it to feel back to normal again, unfortunately. There are flexing exercises you can do to strengthen it. I don't know how to explain the ones my doc showed me, but you could probably find them in a Google search.

And @Jaded there's a qual to your qual, you silly goose so I can't take it!
