my daughter's mom would ask me to fix broken stitches or whatnot, because I know how to stitch a broken hem, bra, etc easily.

Sounds like maybe they are the ones with an insecurity. My husband can sew better than me any day of the week and I would never make fun of him. If anything I feel bad that I can't use the sewing machine as well as he can. But he is super crafty and can fix just about anything. He can do awesome woodworking stuff, build a work bench, tile a floor and then be super awesome and repair my jeans. I think it's awesome.
