My main goal is to get oriented with the limits of both to figure out which is more appropriate to use for particular needs. At the moment I'd like to be able to fill in particular radio buttons (is that the right term? My vocabulary here is very limited!) and submit by pressing keys rather than clicking. Is that within the realm of AHK, or should I be exploring JS more?

Both can do that. The main difference is that JS will need some kind of identifier for the radio buttons... so non standard inputs like surveys aren't practical for JS. AHK doesn't care... it will just replicate keystrokes in that instance.
