I find maintaining the facial hair requires a little more work than the rest of head. Beard oil makes so much difference (and according to the GF makes my face smell amazing.)

Yeah that's a huge part of grooming. I don't rock beards or heavy facial hair, but if you do its a must. Just letting it grow out tends to make it look nasty and probably uncomfortable for the person too

Like @Kadauchi said just be well groomed. There's also plenty of products that maintain a more natural relaxed look. Sea salt spray is very popular for longer hair natural styles for example.
Using a hair dryer and combing can go a long way too.
