If you read the context, it's not "penny deposits".

"One person hurt by the seizure is Andrew Clyde, a Georgia gun shop owner, who told the House subcommittee he regularly made deposits at just less than $10,000 because that was the limit covered by his insurance policy. By law, bank deposits and withdrawals over $10,000 must be reported to the IRS. It’s a felony to “structure” transactions to avoid that law. Clyde, who owns the Clyde Armory gun shop in Athens, Ga., admitted to making more than 100 just-under-$10,000 bank transactions over 10 months — but said he did so because of the insurance policy."

After they figured out what happened, the IRS apologized and he got everything restored. So don't make numerous deposits of $9,999.99.

x worked for the IRS. Even 10 grand is too much. And don't withdrawal either. Thing is I thought the bank was supposed to do paperwork either way and send that to the IRS. That's why you don't put that much in or take it out as the bank will report it for you. That doesn't beat the one in the post about the 81 year old man though. I didn't research him. These things seem to happen all the time and they wonder why no one carries cash anymore not that we have it to carry.

Just ask 81-year-old James Huff. He was pulled over and subjected to a roadside stop-and-search. The police seized $8,400 on suspicion of drug connections.

The funny thing is about the gun shop owner is pawn shop types don't go to the bank without concealed as they are carrying so much money so they carry something else too.
