That actually turns me off from a lot of HBO's shows. It initially turned me off from Game of Thrones, too, until years later a friend pointed out that it was really only the first season that was really bad. It just seems so pointless and forced to me. If I want to watch people having sex, I'll watch porn, not something that I'm attempting to watch for plot.

i quit watching game of thrones bc of this, good to know it gets better. haven't even tried the others.

The AV Club website has a running joke that when there's a gratuitous sex or nude scene in an HBO show, it's because their CEO of Tits demanded it. I agree they overdo it but at this point it's almost like their signature, like TBS and shows that are completely unfunny.

It seemed especially senseless with GoT to me, I think because I read the books. There's already so much sex in the books and HBO went and started adding even more sex that wasn't even in there. I think after the first season, they must have realized that they just had too much story to tell, to include all of that, so it kinda got toned down a bit. There's still a lot in the other seasons, but I think it's more on par with the books and not nearly as bad as that first season.
