The swirled lines represent the snail's eternal struggle, its perpetual confusion at the state of it's life, its utter anguish at the bleak and unforgiving nature of life on this earth. The bold, blacker than black pen strokes have been applied forcefully and with clear intention by the artist. The flowing, organic lines of the snails smile mask his true inner turmoil and evoke a deceptively sweet, almost child-like aesthetic. The use of empty space, rather than any natural pattern on the snail's shell stands in stark contrast to the bold and marked outlines of the nautilus. It again echoes the pure emptiness and misery of life lived as the lowest of creatures, the life of a snail.
