I said that there are sailors, airmen, marines, soldiers, coastguardsmen, etc., and that it would be better to just refer to them as military personnel. I didn't feel like going any further than that! Maybe my words will help them to understand that not everyone is a soldier, but they serve our country equally.

Almost exactly what I would have said. And good on ya for including the Coast Guard, who are largely forgotten, bless their hearts.
