i've found that whenever i delete it altogether that the first page just asks me for my worker ID instead of displaying it. also i believe that whenever you submit a HIT it gives the requester your worker ID.

Yeah, but that's not necessarily always the case and there's not really any way that you can know heading into the survey, so I think it's just the safer bet to leave the ID in the URL if you can.
