Depends where the teacher works. Also, it depends on supply and demand. If enough teachers are willing to accept lower pay, then they will not get a pay raise.

Well that's an interesting, albeit naive way of looking at the matter. Institutionally, there has been a concerted effort for many, many years not to pay teachers a reasonable wage or accord them the autonomy their training and responsibilities merit. But most people, like you, don't really know or think about this.

Teachers don't always get paid poorly. The median in my area is around 45,000 dollars (more than enough to survive in my area). If a teacher doesn't like their pay, they can always go somewhere else and teach. A lot of liberal areas pay teachers great.

Teachers... one of the few careers paths where you can make 40k+ a year and essentially get two months off for summer + paid holidays and vacations and still whine about not making enough money.
