You are making a lot of assumptions. First, that just because people are going quickly that they will lose quality. This isn't necessarily true.
Second, that people are competing with each other. They are just curious how they compare to others. Were they doing a good speed, or were they slower than average. It could be good for them to decide if they want to work on those hits again in the future.

If you assume a negative thing, that doesn't mean it is negative for everyone.
