You shouldn't be, no rat or handler has ever been lost due to the mines. The rats are too light to trigger them and the handlers stay a safe distance away, it's much cheaper and much faster than using people or dogs to clear minefields. Really that whole program is fantastic, they have cleared thousands of acres that people can now use again.

The rats are paid for the labor too... and live fairly cushy lives for a rat. IIRC the company doing this is also branching out into using them detect diseases too. Cancer and tuberculosis I think. Been a while since I kept up with that and my memory is pretty bad.
