I'm sure he was platoon leader or something to that effect. He definitely was not an officer. The only info I get about it is from his wife, since he doesn't care to speak about it.

A platoon leader is usually a junior officer (a second or first lieutenant or an equivalent rank), but it sounds like he may have been a platoon sergeant, the backbone of the Army (or Marines). See if you can cajole him to do a "living memory" thing for your local library [wink wink]

Oh I wasn't saying that the jungle and the method of fighting wasn't full of horrors. I was talking about the way its easier to cope as a community than as an individual. IE. A loved one dies in a car wreck and you may be devastated for life but if they died in a plane crash with 200 other people you still feel the loss but its shared with a community of others who also have a loss.

No way I can disagree with that.

I know what you mean. I think I had that one yesterday. Some of them are really hard to watch.
