Is anyone else getting a lot of hacked sites and malware sites today with the zolars? So far I've hit 3 sites that all say they've been hacked by different groups, and 2 sites that have been blocked by my AV.

The ping is the reaction time of your connection–how fast you get a response after you've sent out a request. A fast ping means a more responsive connection, especially in applications where timing is everything.
