I've heard that from more than you though. Same with Jamaica, you don't leave the resorts. That's pretty depressing.

I travelled all over Jamaica and spent very little time at the resort.. It's wise to have a local guide with you though

One of my exes went there with her fam and they got a knife pulled on them and robbed. But they were pretty dumb people and they would have just as likely happened to them in Chicago.
