what happened with updates?

It had a few updates to install and automatically updated overnight. Towards the end it would tell me the updates could not install and would uninstall the updates, but then it had an error during the uninstallation and went through a continuous loop. I tried safe mode with networking but wasn't accepting my usual password and no others and basically had to find the cd for this 6 year old computer and factory reboot it.
