I read quite a few of them when I was younger and enjoyed them, but I know a lot of people criticize Richard A. Knaak's writing as poor, so it's possible they'd suck on re-read.

If you have a Kindle you can usually get a 10 page sample of most e-books

I haven't, although I'm interested I suppose. Usually that type of thing is a cash grab but some of the novels can be good, e.g. Warhammer 40K, the 4 Doom books from the 90s, a lot of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, a few of the Magic the Gathering books. If they're 300-301 page paperbacks, that's a red flag because the authors were just spewing words to fill a contractual page count.

Edit: Just read Heroes Die instead.
