PRE's usually happen when the refresh rate is too high. I usually run it at around 900 - 1000 ms without any problems. Lower than that tends to give a lot of PREs.

I try to keep it to 4-5 pandas but sometimes do more depending on what's out there.

I think people have an unnatural fear of PRE's. Generally you don't want too many, but its good to get some, so you know you aren't leaving cycles on the table. A few PREs here and there won't kill you.

don't be afraid to experiment to and get some PREs, and then just ease back a bit.
