It terrifies me that the internet is leaking into the school systems at such a quick rate these days. I mean, man, I've seen some shit.

*edit* Search engines SUCKED for a long time. I had dial-up when I was still pretty young, but everything these days is so categorized and accessible. You can get everything you want to know from Google searches and all of your content from like three or four providers. Everything feels so connected now. Sometimes it makes me concerned about parenting a child. I feel as though some things should come with age rather than enough cognitive prowess to plop "rule 34" into google and get an eye full of cartoon porn.
I replied before your edit. Are you a parent now?

There are definite ways to protect your kid (current or future). There are also ways for kids to get around all of them, but...I have two older ones who navigated it and came to us first, and my youngest is, so far, obeying the rules. I also control the wireless password, so...he knows if I catch him doing ANYTHING wrong, his internet life is over. He also knows I have no problems taking the router with me when I leave the house so he can't just boot up the desktop and get online without a password.

I don't have one at the moment, but @DelilahLyell and I have plans for the near future. I mean we've been hitched this long. We're just wanting a stable home with a back yard to play in somewhere in a decent neighborhood first.

Just wait until the day where they find away around the router. I remember mainlining in through the modem when my mother tried to pull that. Sure, it was standard phone line back then and not CAT5, but the idea works the same. The one thing I know about kids is they've got way more time on their hands than you do to tear your plans down.

Oh, and desktop logins are trivial to break with physical access. If they are the techy sort be mindful of them being super protective of a flash drive. Either it is a cracker or porn.

*edit* or both.

there is never going to be an internet technology that the the majority of parents will know better than their kids will. So the only thing that will prevent them from abusing the internet is their relationship with their parents.

thank you for that tip :)

and can I give unsolicited advice? Don't wait until you have what you think you need. (a backyard is awesome, tho...I have a huge one). When I had my kid(s) I didn't have that much, but due to them I acquired what we needed, which was different than what I first thought I would need! I'm a single mom, tho (by plan) so all I have is my own perspective for my life's decisions and perhaps they weren't all great ones...

The MOST important thing you need for a child is dedicated parent(s). If you guys have that? You're 90% there. Honestly.

And my router is also the modem...and he has no phone yet so no access without internet. Unless he leaves the house and goes to Starbucks (down the street). And if he does that when he's on restriction, or if he seriously disobeys me, I have told him I will cash out his college fund and spend it all on me and he's on his own for college!

(Since my kid wants to go to college this threat works, so far...)

In a few weeks P L A Y E R 9 1 @P L A Y E R 9 1 will be dancing on the graves of all of the VDXers.
I dont have that one either. I caught the qual but only finished 2 before they were gone. Sigh, doing surveys for a living but prefer batch work but PI is the only qual I have.

my youngest daughter thought she was so sneaking when she would surf teh net at night with her wii. (early generation). I figured if she wanted to lose sleep that was her business, but that damn thing was so slow she couldn't get much done.
