no, you don't even have to file taxes if you made less than 5k...but even if you do file them no way you owe anything because the standard deduction is more than that...so you would still be at zero...

I believe you're correct in your thought that you do in fact need to file still. But, I don't think you have to pay that much by any means given your stated income.

Yeah, Im pretty sure you must file taxes no matter what amount of money you make. I think he might mean the IRS wont come after you for making such a small amount of money? That being said, I know for a fact that the IRS wont spend the resources to come after self employed people unless you make more than 20,000, but everyone should still pay their taxes anyways because its really unethical to not do it and society only runs because of our collective effort an all that jazz.

really? I've never heard that

that's wage income though...if you made that 5k on Mturk or other self employment income then you do have to file because you owe self employment taxes..but that's around 13-14% of what you made....which is only a few hundred dollars
