Only use it to pay for things you can afford to pay back at the end of the month.

Otherwise your money is working against you rather than for you.

my husband maxed my credit card before he left. I've been trying to make payments but I'm not even managing to do the interest payments in full

yep, I go on cruises that are for the most part paid for in reward bonuses, I'm cheap as fuck though. I have two rules, every penny that comes in the house has a job, it gets put in the budget. second rule is every dollar we spend has to make us money

The best way to use a credit card, is to pay for all of your monthly budgeted expenses, and pay it off every month. That way you pay no interest and earn cash back awards.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of being able to make credit cards work for you.

It is not a luxury. It is a skill and a very valuable one. When I was a single mom of 2 boys and working a $12/hr job and not receiving any child support, I was still able to budget and live within my means and get my money to work for me.
