Why is every HIT unavailable?
Like you click on it and it says "No more HITs available"?

Slowness. The better a HIT is, the more likely it is to be snatched up. In the case of surveys, a lot of people don't even post the export until they've grabbed it, and there's a limited number of HITs available. In the 10 seconds it takes for someone to see a HIT, grab the export, and post it, 70-80 percent of HITs will already be gone.

Why is every HIT unavailable?
1) There is less HITs than turkers.
2) When a scraper scans the page, the HIT has already been up.
3) Depending on your scraper settings (and TO's response time), it takes ~0.5s - ~2s after the page is scanned for it to get displayed in HS.
4) Then the person posting is going to accept the HIT before posting it on the forum for the most part.
5) Then you actually have to reload the page after its been posted (no telling how long that is) and while live update is faster, it is still slightly behind.
6) Then you have your reaction time to clicking on the HIT.

But how does one panda a HIT that doesn't exist?
Newer versions of the export script will direct you to the panda directly, and you just refresh that page. Having Turkmaster helps a great deal, because you can set it to automatically refresh the Preview and Accept page for the HIT. If someone throws the survey back, or if the requester posts more, you'll pick it up by just refreshing that link quickly.

Why would someone return a 3.50 HIT?
Because they've already done it, because it involves writing and they don't want to, because it has a screener and they don't qualify, because it uses Inquisit, because it requires them to be on webcam, because it won't work in their particular web browser, because the kitchen catches on fire and the HIT ends up expiring... there are a lot of reasons why HITs get returned, even when they are high dollar HITs.

I think a fast trigger finger is the most underrated skill when it comes to turking.
