Your theater might have "fake Imax". Certain theaters don't have the full set up for Imax but still sell the full price tickets and what not. Imax screens are massive, have better resolution, better audio, etc.

it was a massive screen - there were like three times as many seats as the other showrooms.
if there was better audio or visual, I could not tell

but then again, I'm the guy that prefers standard definition to HD

The differences are oddly both substantial and hard to notice, so it makes sense. A lot of really cool technical stuff going on under the hood, but without a side by side comparison, it's probably not much different for most people.
