Strawberry Wine

Ever hear of dewberry wine?......warning, warning. Recall a time......One hot August summer when I was a kid in Austin, my Mom decided she wanted to make dewberry wine. The little bushes along the railroad tracks were burgeoning with ripe fruit. So my Mom, my best friend and myself spent a couple weeks picking berries. Nastiest thorny plants you ever saw. My friend and I did collect a sizable collection of coke bottles to trade in for ice creams, though. Mom put her crocks of fermenting berries in the corner of the bathroom and eventually decided that they had worked enough, so she strained the lot and bottled up--in anything glass with a lid. My Dad who was home on leave, said he'd taste it. He sipped and asked if it was really wine and not brandy. It tasted so strong. Well, I come home from school one day to find them in the kitchen distilling the wine. It made a pretty, amazingly strong brandy. How exactly, no one could ever say. The stuff hung around the kitchen for years. Apparently still working. No one could ever drink much past a sip, though. It was kinda strong, even flies avoided it. Not so long ago I found a another few bottles in the back of the cabinet and threw them out. I didn't try any. One taste had been enough.
