Our 'big' park in town, created a great play yard. Metal structures - and loads of beautifully colored blue tires, cut into tiny bits that add an incredible cushion under the entire play area. Which has to be safe, right? I mean, the fact that we're in the deep south and it's hotter than anything - and the fumes come up and off-gas all summer..........well, that's safe, isn't it?

I'm a little late chiming in here. But this reminded me of what my son's school did. Decided the trees were making the asphalt on the playground buckle, so they replaced the asphalt over the summer and removed most of the trees.

It regularly reaches over 100 here through September. That asphalt was so hot the first couple of months of school the kids wouldn't even play on it. Just walking across was miserable.
