ANOTHER NERD QUESTION

What is the best Free Anti-Virus software out there now days? This new desktop hasn't been used since 2013 so I'm updating everything and don't have money right now to pay for virus protection. The laptop I was using used a combo of AVG and Adaware Free versions.... wondering since I haven't explored that kind of stuff in forever if there is anything better out there or if I should just stuck with what I know. Thoughts? Opinions???

I use Avast. It's pretty good. Less pop ups than AVG. I dunno if it's just the newer versions of AVG but mine kept demanding permission to change my home page and stuff and wouldn't let me change it back.
