HelloHello @HelloHello the most apolitical answer I would give (and it's the truth, too) is taxes. The budget calls for another huge increase in what is really a small town. (Second year in a row).

i don't know about other states because I don't know if this is a fed thing, but ohio has a 3 percent tax every time one uses their credit/debit cards. Big reason to carry cash. I had to get smarter. I carry enough cash for groceries, need to live accessories, write a check for rent, and so on. But if I was getting the car fixed, I used debit card, until the merchant told me what was being done. Now I go to the bank first. Probably slap a tax on that next. That three percent is a tax. The items we need are going up because of that T word. That's a tax ... And if I pay a bill online which kind of have to because utility places don't usually have payment offices anymore that one can find, well, it's a several dollar charge for that.

Pretty picture painted. But look behind the mirror. Pretty picture ain't gonna work. Pretty picture ain't cost effective and it ain't enviromentally effective.

I hope the tax failed. Yeah, cutting back is difficult, but so is living without money.

Vermont has a strange system and our town has a stranger one, still. So, my guess is this years increase will go through. The fear is that next year there will be ANOTHER hit. We elected someone who would say no, someone who would say maybe, and someone who would say yes.

Sigh.

it's probably not a tax, but the typical 2-3% a credit card company charges the merchant for processing fees/network usage to carry out the transaction.

Many places (landlords, utilities, city, state, county and federal govts) charge 2-3% "convenience fee" if you use a credit card to make a payment to essentially cover the merchant fees they pay on the transaction. Many places you can pay with an ACH transfer with no extra fees direct from your bank account (really common with electronic payments to the government for various licenses, registrations and taxes).

gas stations don't add a credit card fee, but many offer a cash discount lower price if you don't use a card.

I don't remember what I did because it took me a bit to find everything, but I think it's MTS that you have to click on and move the bar to keep it working.
