Does anyone have any insight on planning a trip there?

I am a cheap person. I like to spend as little as possible.
I don't like guided tours, because I hate being told when and where to be.

Can save quite a bit of money if you take a boat there from Libya.

Be prepared to walk a lot. Spend at least a few days in Rome, a lot to do and see. I stayed near the Vatican, as it was cool to walk there and see the popemobile in person. You can take a day trip to Pisa, one day was plenty. Florence is an experience, but I liked Rome better. See everything you absolutely can, some of the sights/history (especially Rome and Florence) just overwhelmed me thinking about everything. I loved Assisi for an afternoon. Food costs more at some restaurants if you sit down vs. standing or at the bar. I went in college with the choir, so I was poor and we bought food at the grocery store and cooked once or twice a day and had at least one meal out and about. EAT ALL OF THE GELATO. Pasta is a course in Italy (as in, salad, pasta course, then meat/potato), so basically carbs are your friend. I loved the trip. The only thing we didn't spend enough time doing (in my opinion) was more of the Southern Italy resort/beach part. It depends on what you're looking for--I loved the history and the city life, but some people want the picturesque feel.
