I remember in the time leading up to the episode, he was asked if he was going to be a part. His responses were always in an excited tone. Then word came that he hadn't been asked.

But just now I read an article where Moffat said that he turned it down. I have to wonder if this is true (because no Who/Sherlock fan would ever truly trust Moffat) and if so, I wonder if Eccleston had some sort of personal emergency or issue that he was dealing with at the time he was asked to participate. He's a good dude, but also a private dude, so I suppose we'll never really know.

I can't remember where i heard, probably my daughter, but yeah i thought he'd turned it down, something in the sense of wanting to distance himself from that character, do other things, whatever. Or it seems I vaguely remember a quote by him, not sure. Could have been a quote quoting him incorrectly. Anyway I'm ashamed now that I just automatically assumed it was true.

The funny part about these is they were all early 2000s quotes (at least the ones I got,) and we've been rewatching The West Wing at night, so it was actually super helpful to remember which side of things policies came down on then.
