I guess I phrased it wrong; I probably meant "I _would rather_ it were more steady growth
however, even though the up-to-the-minute price of bitcoin/usd fluctuates wildly,
the trades that I do (litecoin/bitcoin) are more consistent, and are a slower growth/dip

when a widely used resource publishes that the prices are about to jump, people buy into the hype.
when you have many more buys than sells, the market price responds; limit sells are triggered as it rises, furthering the climb
