Now I am looking into dental insurance. I didn't expect real life/relevant chat here. *sigh* :(
I've never shopped around for it because I've always been on an employer plan. Maybe I should. I've just begun to notice that compared to my health insurance plan it works out to more of a discount club card than actual insurance.

Also, if you don't want to pay for insurance and live next to a university that has a dental school, they usually have clinics set up to get a cleaning for free. I mean, if you can stand the thought of dental students working on your teeth, anyway.
Having dental insurance is obviously better than not having it, but I've found that unless it's a cleaning/xrays the cost is still ridiculous. I had a root canal earlier this year. It cost me $2800.
I imagine my experience was better than the usual, because I had a graduating that spring student who was very good, but I went to the [redacted] dental school and had a few fillings, two crowns, and one root canal done. The root canal and crown was only like $600-800 total if I remember correctly.

how much of the root canal did insurance cover? i'm looking at what it covers "cosmetically" i.e - chipped teeth, bonding, etc... and it looks like a lot of dental insurances don't cover anything cosmetically. so bleh

Just a reminder to look out for Dentists that charge based on a sliding fee scale as well.

If you make under a certain amount you hardly have to pay anything.

Plus a lot of places will do a cash discount. Make sure to shop around and get a lot of estimates.

It was two teeth so I can see how the costs kind of jumped. The procedure itself was around 70% covered after a $350 deductible. Two crowns were the major cost. That was only around 35% covered.
