I tried to make it small enough but when it finally got there it was real shitty looking so no, I gave up on my dreams.

The current max file size for an avatar is 175 kb (did we change this recently, @notkrys? I feel like that used to be higher.) So, as long as it's under that file size, it should work. It should automatically resize the dimensions of anything over 200 x 200, but I find that making sure it's under that tends to help, as well. Like, I upload most of mine at 180 x 180.
