hmm
Dont get me wrong I miss my cell phone, but it fried out I owed sprint almost $200.. They apparently canceled my warranty without my permission. and well I refused to pay my bill after that.. I send $5 here and there LOL... But I cant afford a new phone :/
I have tracfone and they sell 'medium' quality smartphones with 1500 minutes/text/1.5gb of data included for around $100 and up. If you don't use it much that can work or can buy the refills 1500/1500/1.5gb for $100 or whatever refill you want or signup with an actual plan they offer if you needed it.

I got my father a samsung probably 'mid level' smartphone for =~$150 with the 1500/1500/1.5gb included from qvc or hsn I forget which. I always got crappy cell service in my home area but I haven't been with a proper network (verizon/sprint/whoever) in more than a decade so maybe the network quality isn't that great for people doing lots of streaming etc I couldn't say. There are lots of sites to check the quality in your area though. For me not using it much except for apps/calling/texting it's great at $9<=~ a month.

I went with consumer cellular, i only pay $35 a month for 2 lines. I would suggest just buying an unlocked phone at whatever price you can afford and then going to set up the plan if you went that route.

*edit there is another route to go if you only need one line that has unlimited talk and text for $15 a month, i'd have to research again to remember who had that deal though

Its not the phone service its the buying of the phone.. I am so hard on phones I dont trust a used one.. I am prolly going to go with the Verizon prepaid It's like $40 with 3g internet and unused roll over unlimited talk & text.. service seems to pretty good in this area. Just gotta wait till I can afford the cell phone itself.. I will need one with zoya starting ballet and my car being crap LOL

I have Red Pocket and have had for about 5 years and I am very happy. They use the existing networks' towers and I've traveled and lived in two states and always had Verizon service. It's been great. The lowest priced plan is $10 and that gives you unlimited text, limited voice, and limited data but you can add on time if you need it very cheaply. There are a variety of plans from there including family plans. All you need is a factory unlocked phone. No brick and mortar presence.

I have an iPhone.

My phone (refurbed) Samsung Galaxy S4 was $30 and my service is free (I get 200 minutes voice, 500 texts, 500MB data free each month).

If my phone ever broke, there are more in the $30-50 range so it doesn't kill you with an expense of a new phone and service continues to be free if I don't go over the limits.

Tracfone is super affordable. And you can also get almost any cheap-ass phone from Amazon, pop one of their cards in it, and even if you have to call them to activate- you're still good to go.
I spend $16 a month. And I have kids, so I HAVE to have a phone. I dunno what'd I fucking do if I had to rely on one of the big companies and sign a contract or anything.
I've use Tracfone with an $80-ish dollar smartphone, no damn difference in service.

I have fried every phone I ever had in less than 2 years :/ My last one was a HTC10 I went through 2 of them in less than 3 years. I need a smart phone because I have WIC and other apps I have to access... So needs pretty decent memory. Been using my daughters tablet and its a nightmare
