It really does vary quite a bit and there's no way to predict. Requesters do have to fund their account first so that's not related. It's just one of those MTurk quirks.

It's not direct from the requesters. Mturk holds the money. Then, pretty much when they feel like it, they'll pay it out. Normally they pay out a bunch of hits at the same time in groups.
