Last time I did that a few weeks ago, I just got a message saying that I had forgotten followed by multiple exclamation marks. Not too bad, considering.

It sounds like it's much like getting approved for MTurk (some people get approved and some don't and we don't know why). Some people get a 10 day and some get a 30 day and we don't know why. Non-US seems to always get a 30 day, but for in the US, some get 10 and some get 30 and it's not clear why. But in the new worker's welcome email, it will say whether their probation is a 10 day or 30 day. So @lemming2, check your welcome email from MTurk to find out how long your probation is.

oh, i didn't realize their email would indicate which probation period. that is at least somewhat helpful.

I'm pretty sure there's some labyrinthine dungeon somewhere in the Antarctic filled with Yowis and Reptilian Nordic Spacemen that contains a dusty tome stating the exact procedures and policies Amazon uses for Mturk.
