You're better off just getting quals.

How so? Quals are few and far between from what I have been told. They only amount to a small fraction of peoples income. How can anything be better than a script that auto accepts the work for you? Especially when used in conjunction with quals?

That's just how mTurk goes. You just have to on and available when something drops. Sometimes you get masters, sometimes you don't. MTurk is anything but predictable.
